Who Needs to Obtain CertificationCompanies and institutions in Iceland with 25 or more employees, on an annual basis, are required to obtain Equal Pay Certification. This obligation applies to both private and public sector organizations.

When to Obtain CertificationThe requirement for Equal Pay Certification took effect on January 1, 2018. Organizations must renew their certification every three years to ensure ongoing compliance with the Equal Pay Standard.

What to PrepareOrganizations seeking certification must:
Implement an Equal Pay Management System: Establish a system that ensures decisions on wages are based solely on relevant considerations, free from gender-based discrimination. This system should comply with the รST 85:2012 Standard, known as the Equal Pay Standard.
Conduct a Pay Analysis: Perform a thorough analysis of the organization's pay structure to identify and address any gender-based pay gaps.
Document Policies and Procedures: Maintain comprehensive documentation of policies, procedures, and processes related to wage determination and ensure they align with the Equal Pay Standard.

How to Obtain CertificationThe certification process involves:
Engaging an Accredited Certification Body: Hire a certification body accredited to assess compliance with the รST 85:2012 Standard.
Undergoing an Audit: The certification body will conduct an audit of the organization's equal pay system and its implementation to verify compliance with the standard.
Receiving Certification: Upon successful completion of the audit, the organization will receive Equal Pay Certification, confirming that its pay practices meet the required standards.
Applying for the Equal Pay Symbol: After obtaining certification, organizations can apply to the Centre for Gender Equality to use the Equal Pay Symbol, signifying compliance with equal pay requirements.

Penalties for Non-ComplianceOrganizations failing to obtain or renew Equal Pay Certification may be subject to per diem fines. The Centre for Gender Equality is authorized to impose these fines to enforce compliance with the certification requirements.
